2020: Fact check: U.N. Agenda 21/2030 'New World Order' is not a real document
The claim: The United Nations will establish a 'new world order' under its Agenda 21/2030 Mission Goals Is a "new world order" part of the UN's plan? There is evidence that the claim has circulated on social media for years, but a May repost by Facebook user Vernon Adkinson recently went viral. Over 20 goals comprise the "new world order" the United Nations will focus on as part of its "Agenda 21/2030 Mission Goals," according to the claim. Items on the agenda include one world government; a single cashless currency; government-owned and controlled schools, colleges and universities and an end to single-family homes. "THIS IS NOT A CONSPIRACY THEORY," Adkinson insisted in the caption. "If you don’t believe it, a simple google search will take you to the U.N. website where you can access the document and read it for yourself. It is amazing (not) how well the Covid 19 plandemic ties in with Agenda 21/2030." https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/07/23/fact-check-uns-agenda-21-2030-agenda-wont-create-new-world-order/5474884002/ - An Old Conspiracy Theory Known As "Agenda 21" Has Been Rebooted By The Coronavirus Pandemic People on social media are sharing posts that link the pandemic to claims that a totalitarian world government is seeking to kill most of the planet’s population. https://www.buzzfeed.com/joeydurso/coronavirus-agenda-21-5g Agenda 21, a wild conspiracy theory reignited by coronavirus A conspiracy theory that 90 percent of the world's population will be killed off spreads widely on pandemic fears. In an age drowning in conspiracy theories, Agenda 21, a tinfoil favorite that goes back to the ’90s has been reignited by the coronavirus. The gist – a totalitarian world cabal is trying to depopulate the planet by 90 percent and the U.N. is in on it. As are numerous governments (including yours). The reason for the conspiracy theory’s recent surge in shares and popularity? It can tie in vaccinations, Soros, Bill Gates, and 5G into a neat nexus of paranoid fantasies. The conspiracy, spun out of a nonbinding UN resolution on sustainable development from 1992, actually envisions a whole New World Order that is supposedly being brought into existence by nefarious global operators. The “21” part of Agenda 21 refers to the target year of 2021 from the original UN plan. By now that goal post has been moved to 2030, by which date, the conspiracy claims, we would get a one-world government, subjugating the rest of the nations. The smörgåsbord of fears includes one world currency, one religion (if any), one military, no private property, no family units, mandatory vaccines, microchips for everyone, Social Credit System, 5G monitoring, and the government raising your children and controlling all the schools. People would not be able to own cars or businesses as everything will be managed either by corporations or governments. Agenda 21, as it’s currently presented in social media on accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers, also attacks Universal Basic Income and purports people will be segregated into human settlement zones (a favorite of dystopian teenage fiction). https://bigthink.com/health/agenda-21-a-wild-conspiracy-theory-reignited-by-coronavirus/ 2019: TENS OF THOUSANDS OF AUSTRALIANS ENGAGING IN 'AGENDA 21' CONSPIRACY ON SOCIAL MEDIA Tens of thousands of Aussies are lapping up a "ridiculous" conspiracy theory — that climate change is a United Nations-led hoax to aggressively depopulate the world. Social media platforms are being used to push the theory, known as Agenda 21, and, in the past four weeks alone, hundreds of Australians have engaged in posts about it. A joint investigation by news.com.au and social media intelligence agency Storyful over the past month has found only a handful of these posts take place on fringe sites such as Gab and 4chan. The bulk of Agenda 21 conversations are on mainstream platforms Twitter and Facebook — where tens of thousands of Aussies have liked and followed Australian-based pages dedicated to the conspiracy. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/tens-of-thousands-of-australians-engaging-in-agenda-21-conspiracy-on-social-media/OR2HIBAD7VXNIEFHZ2YPYTHKFY/ 2014: AGENDA 21: THE UN, SUSTAINABILITY AND RIGHT-WING CONSPIRACY THEORY Introduction The Problem: Agenda 21 and the Right The Players: Anti-Agenda 21 Activists And the Nazis Join In… Virtually none of the outlandish claims about Agenda 21 are true. Yet, as with all such baseless propaganda, the hysteria over it has had the effect of poisoning any kind of rational discussion of the very real challenges we face — challenges that are essential to tackle head-on in an increasingly complex and stressed world. UN Agenda 21 is an action plan of the UN with regard to sustainable development and a product of the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. It is a nonbinding agreement that has been supported and agreed to by every United States president from George H.W. Bush on. We can decide for ourselves if this constitutes a conspiracy. However, for our supervisor to delude us into thinking that Agenda 21 and/or its impact are imaginary is to do his constituents a great disservice. https://www.theunion.com/news/twi/agenda-21-conspiracy-theory-or-not/ 2012: Agenda 21 Conspiracy Theory: Completely Absurd, Frighteningly Effective https://usa.streetsblog.org/2012/06/01/agenda-21-conspiracy-theory-completely-absurd-frighteningly-effective/ PEEKING BEHIND THE CURTAIN OF BIG OIL-FUNDED AGENDA 21 CONSPIRACY MONGERS If you haven’t been following the story of the Agenda 21 conspiracy theory, here’s a quick overview. Some people believe a two-decade-old, non-binding UN plan to promote sustainable development means the government is going to seize their land and cars and force them to live in tenements. The ultra-conservative John Birch Society says that Agenda 21 “seeks to curtail your freedom to travel as you please, own a gas-powered car, live in suburbs or rural areas, and raise a family.” Despite its complete detachment from reality, the conspiracy theory seems to have influence and staying power. The Republican National Committee has condemned Agenda 21. The state of Tennessee passed a resolution against it (one legislator even said it would result in “forced abortions“). Colorado gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes infamously cited Agenda 21 as the basis of his opposition to Denver’s bike-share system. Tea Party adherents convinced that smart growth projects are a threat to their liberties have disrupted planning meetings all over the country. In Maine, Republican Governor Paul LePage halted an award-winning transportation and land use plan after one such outburst, though state officials denied that the decision was influenced by the conspiracy theorists. Overall, a small percentage of Americans have been taken in by Agenda 21 paranoia, according to a survey commissioned by the firm Collective Strength, which does market research for many smart growth-related organizations. They found that 85 percent of Americans had never heard of Agenda 21, and only six percent oppose it. “I genuinely believe the Agenda 21 phenomenon is highly manufactured,” Collective Strength’s Robin Rather told TreeHugger. “It’s not out there in the mainstream.” https://usa.streetsblog.org/2012/07/12/peeking-behind-the-curtain-of-big-oil-funded-agenda-21-conspiracy-mongers/ Paranoia and Conspiracy Theories https://www.mentalhelp.net/blogs/paranoia-and-conspiracy-theories/ https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/may/02/why-we-are-addicted-to-conspiracy-theories https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/28/health/psychology-conspiracy-theories.html
